United Way prepares for 2007 Campaign with Business Blitz

Special to The Daily Union, July 11, 2007

JUNCTION CITY, KS---The board of directors and agencies of the United Way of Junction City – Geary County are “blitzing” the business community this month requesting early donations in preparation for the launch of the 2007 Campaign.

“By contacting our business partners early, we get a head start on our annual fundraising efforts,” said Marcia Smith, executive director of the local United Way.  “The Blitz gives us more time during the two months of the official campaign to talk to groups of employees and civic organizations about the work of our 14 agencies.  The more people know about the work that is being done with their donations, the more enthusiastic they are about supporting that work.”

This year’s campaign will be officially launched on Friday, July 27, at the last fireworks’ night of the General’s Baseball Season.  The festivities will include the presentation of the city of Junction City’s donation with city employees and their families as the evening’s special guests.  The Junction City High School Honor Guard will post the colors and members of the Lady Blues ensemble will sing The National Anthem.

All 14 agencies of the JCGC United Way will be on hand before the game and during early innings to answer questions and provide information about the critical work they do in this community.  Those agencies include: Armed Services YMCA, Family YMCA, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Geary County CASA, Big Brothers Big Sisters, The Crisis Center, Boys and Girls Club, Special Olympics, The Open Door, Geary County Food Pantry, The American Red Cross, Kansas Legal Services, and Konza Prairie Community Health Center.

Last year United Way agencies helped provide services on more than 25,000 occasions thanks to the $160,000 contributed by the people who live and work here. “The need is growing right along with this growing community,” said Smith.  The 2007 goal is $175,000 to be raised during the August-September campaign.

Military members and civilian employees at Fort Riley are being asked to designate their hometown United Way (CFC #98013) when they fill out pledge forms for the Combined Federal Campaign.  By doing this, their donation dollars will help fund the 14 agencies that are providing services to their families while they are stationed here.

“Through the United Way, the Geary County and Fort Riley community has made a commitment again in 2007 to support what matters: identifying and solving root problems and changing lives,” said Smith. “Our theme for 2007 is Help us Help.”
