The United Way of
Junction City-Geary County received a donation today of $955 from Embarq,
putting its 2006 goal of $160,000 within reach by the end of the year.
Embarq also gave a corporate donation of $4,000.
"In the past 10 years Embarq has provided $106,809 in funding for the United Way," said Carolyn Gaston of Embarq. "It always makes me proud to know of the charitable interest of our company to worthy organizations."
"We can't say thank you enough to companies like Embarq, who can be counted on year after year for their generous support," said Marcia Smith, executive director for United Way of Junction City-Geary County.
Information on the progress of the 2006 United Way Campaign can be found on the new Web site www.unitedwayjcgc.org. It showcases the work of the 14 agencies of the local United Way, describing the work done throughout the year thanks to the donations from the Junction City community during the annual fund raising campaign.
According to Smith, the majority of donations have come from employees like those at Embarq who contribute through payroll deductions: money taken automatically out of their paychecks each month. The rest of the $160,000 goal for this year has come from businesses and individuals.
"We're not at our goal yet, but with the contributions still coming in like this one today from Embarq, it looks very good for meeting our goal," said Smith. "And the important thing about meeting this goal is that the people who need help in Geary County will receive it this coming year through the great work of United Way agencies."
Those agencies for 2006 included Junction City Family YMCA, Boy Scouts of America Coronado Council, Girl Scouts Kaw Valley Council, Geary County Girls Softball, The Crisis Center, Armed Services YMCA, Special Olympics, The Open Door, Geary County Food Pantry, The American Red Cross, Kansas Legal Services, Konza Prairie Community Health Center and United Cerebral Palsy of Kansas.
"Our new Web site will help inform the public of the work done by all the agencies throughout the year so they can see what good use their donations are put to on a daily basis," said Smith.
The site also gives information on how to make a donation and how to contact United Way's local board of directors.
