The 2006 United Way Campaign is off and running.

(September 1, 2006)

The Business Blitz, marking the beginning of the 45th annual local campaign, brought in more than $5,o00 thanks to the companies of the Junction City business community who responded to their early morning phone calls on Thursday. United Way board members and agency directors made telephone requests for donations, promoted the work of the United Way agencies in the community, and personally collected contributions during the wee hours of the morning on September 17.

“This first effort would not have been a success without the energy and dedication of our volunteer board members and agency representatives who made this happen,” said Marcia Smith, executive director of United Way Junction City and Geary County. “It also would not have happened without the generosity of KJCK in donating their morning programming in support of this year’s fund raising campaign.”

From 6 to 10 a.m. KJCK listeners heard descriptions of the work that is done by some of the 14 agencies that receive funding from the United Way of Junction City and Geary County. Directors from the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, YMCA, Kansas Legal Services, the Red Cross, Konza Prairie Community Health Center, and the Crisis Center were on the air reporting on their current activities, services – and growing needs.

Platinum Broadcasting also added to the blitz by taking the opportunity to present the United Way with a $527.75 check from the golf tournament they sponsor each spring for the benefit of both the Geary County and Riley County United Way chapters. It was the largest single donation of the first day of the 2006 campaign.

“Now if we can raise $5,000 every day of the campaign, we’ll easily reach that $160,000 goal,” Smith said. “This community has demonstrated once again it has a huge spirit of giving, and today is just the beginning.”

The United Way also thanks honorary co-chairs for the 2006 Campaign retired Army Lt. Gen. Richard Seitz and Junction City Mayor and Mrs. Terry Heldstab for their generous contributions to the Kick Off.
